Tea does not grow in England but the British presence in Asia and Africa during the 18th and 19th centuries was introduced to tea. In 1843, Richard Davies developed a mixture of different black teas, including Orange Pekoe. These leaves contain certain flavonoids and caffeine is one of them, comprising nearly 3%. Thus the tea behaves as a stimulant when used without milk. That is why this blend has grown popular as a breakfast tea.
Another flavonoid component found in these tea leaves are known as Theaflavins. Recent studies have shown that theaflavins, a group of compounds found in tea, can lower the level of "bad" (LDL) cholesterol and raise the level of "good" (HDL) cholesterol, and has also been shown to help stabilize blood sugar levels when drunk unsweetened. While the efficacy of these medicinal benefits may vary in merit, English Breakfast Tea is thoroughly enjoyed throughout the day in England and elsewhere.
